Estofado Technique
The statue is wood carved by Nirvardo Rodriguez. The
polychrome paint technique is the same one used by the Spanish Retablo
artists of the 15th and 16th centuries. The foundation of the technique
is the traditional rabbit skin glue, a strong organic adhesive,
followed by several layers of white gesso. A red clay is then applied
to support the gold
leaf.
"This technique is almost extinct. I love keeping
it alive !"
